The ending

So as not to spoil the ending for those who are still going, I will post the question in the comments page....

At the end of the novel T.Ray tells Lily that she was responsible for her mothers death - it was not suicide or murder. Do you believe him? Were you disappointed not to know definitively who killed Lily's mother?

That threw me a bit. Even just reading the blurb on the back of the book gave me the impression that Lily was not the culprit, but as I kept reading I sort of half expected that it would turn out to have been Lily in the end. I guess it was good though, because when I started the book I thought 'oh here we go, poor downtrodden Cinderella character who is totally innocent and who will triumph against evil in the end....' which I thought would have been rather dull. Even Lily, didn't believe it was her.
But perhaps that was meant to make Lily a more real character, not all questions are answered in life and not all endings are happy and conclusions reached. I didn't really like Lily, so was kind of glad that she didn't get the answer she was expecting.
T Ray obviously had other issues that he hadn't dealt with and probably should go and see a counsellor.

before I re-read it I was telling someone else about it and told them Lily's father killed her mother and blamed it on her and then read it again and realised she did (I believed t-ray). it's so much more a familiar storyline to have an innocent character and I like that Sue Monk Kidd avoided that. Kind of "sometimes bad things just happen".
