What did you think of the format?

Erina Library's bookclub did the Guernsey etc etc (lazy) recently and one person said to me "oh, it was all letters and I couldn't handle it, just gave up" but another liked it and said it neatly avoided overly descriptive, long-winded depictions of people and places as the format restricted it.

I liked the format. I found it easy to read though I sometimes got confused when I forgot to read who the letter was to and from. I agree that it perhaps would have been a longer book which would have needed more descriptions if written in a 'traditional' format. It was good to just pick up and dip into when I had some spare time.

I agree totally with Bec! My only but was that, by virtue of having the most letters, the only character I really got to know well, as an individual voice, was Juliet, which I didn't mind at all because I loved her! Elizabeth came through well too, I guess because she was the centre of the story.

At first I found it a bit difficult because I kept skipping over the to and from part. But after a while I got used to it and actually really enjoyed hearing from a variety of characters. I wonder if it is more difficult to write this way than just a straight narrative?

As an aside, I quite enjoyed the narky letters from the old bag, I can't remember her name! :-)
